WESTMORELAND DRAINAGE DISTRICT

Among the more important municipal corporations within the Township of Niles is the Westmoreland Drainage District, which comprises about 1,180 acres of land in the northern part of the township and the southern part of New Trier Township. This district was organized in record time, the petite owners having been filed August 9th, and the assessment roll having been confirmed by the County Court November 15th, 1915. The district was organized for the purpose of making more valuable the lands within it, by taking care of the large amount of standing water which has, in former years, proved troublesome to the property owners.

The present commissioners of the district.are George Landeck, chairman; Emil Eggert, secretary, and William J. Galitz. The treasurer of the district is John W. Brown, president of Niles Center State Bank, who is himself the owner of considerable land in the district. This system of drainage constructed of shale tile and without any open ditches, will doubtless prove great benefit to the land drained and also the community being anxious for drainage, proceedings are speedy. Mr. H. P. Castle, of 29 South LaSalle St., is the attorney for this district.

Chas. S. Castle, twenty-five years in the banking business, was born at Barrington, was postmaster at Austin 1889 to 1894, treasurer Town of Cicero, 1894-06, and is now president Standard Trust & Savings Bank, Chicago, is well known, being a member of the following: Union League, Mid-Day and Bankers’ Clubs, Board of Trade, Golf Clubs at Wheaton, Westward Ho and Oak Park.
