Drafting and amending the Fair Housing Ordinance, 1967-1969

During the summer of 1967, the Skokie Human Relations Commission (SHRC) drafted Skokie's fair housing law. The fall was dominated by campaigns to get the ordinance passed by the Village board of Trustees. The SHRC recommended the ordinance to the Board on September 27, 1967 and it was passed on October 1, 1967.

The ordinance went into effect on January 1, 1968 (a federal fair housing law was passed later that year).

Throughout 1968 and 1969, the commission worked on amendments to the legislation.
