A Discriminatory History

Booklet from 1940 containing the by-laws and policies of the East Side Property Owners' Association in Niles Center, IL (now Skokie). Indicates that membership was limited to White men over the age of 21.

Provided by the Skokie Historical Society, this booklet is indicative of a pattern of racial discrimination in Skokie, common with the practices of homeowners' associations and other private groups throughout the nation at the time. This and other artifacts from the first half of the 20th century demonstrate the need for fair housing and other anti-discrimination legislation.
