They’re casting about
for ‘extras’ in movie
MANY SKOKIANS, learning that
their village is the subject of an
upcoming CBS-TV movie, are not
willing to wait until spring and
watch the finished product in their
own homes. Now that Skokie’s 1½
year battle to prevent a neo-Nazi
march is about to be committed to
film, they want to be part of the
action.
So, for those of our readers who
aspire to film stardom, we offer the
information which may start them
on their way.
Casting directors for the film,
which will begin shooting on Nov.
14, will be in Skokie soon to sign up
extras for various scenes. The date
and place will be announced later.
Would-be actors and actresses
are asked to bring small, "normallooking” pictures of themselves
which can be left with the casting
personnel.
Casting Director Debbie Rosen
said the applicants will be interviewed briefly and given information sheets. Their pictures will be
put on file, she said. for use when
each scene is cast.
Especially sought are middleaged men, although “extra” parts
also are available for younger and
older men and women of various
ages. Both “Jewish-looking” and
“not Jewish-looking” persons are
needed, Rosen said.
Children, however, are not needed and are not requested at the
screening.

Description
An account of the resource

During the late 1970s, a small group of neo-Nazis based in Chicago attempted to hold a rally in the Village of Skokie, Illinois, a community that was known to have a large Jewish population. Local officials resisted the group’s efforts through by passing a series of ordinances aimed at preventing demonstrations or parades by hate groups. The ordinances were ultimately overturned following a series of state and federal lawsuits because they infringed on the group’s First Amendment rights and the neo-Nazis were issued a permit to demonstrate in Skokie. However, instead of facing the growing number of organized counter-demonstrators, the group held rallies in Federal Plaza and in Marquette Park in Chicago.

Visit Skokie Public Library's online exhibit to see the events as they unfolded. The library's digital collection, seen here, includes newspaper articles, editorials, recordings from the Skokie Village Board of Trustees meetings, a memoir written by a local clergywoman, and two documentary films.
