Berger lauds
anti-Nazi fight
SAMUEL BERGER, Democratic candidate for
state senator in the 4th district, this week praised the
efforts of Skokie officials and State Sen. Howard Carroll (D-15th) in seeking to prevent a Nazi march in
Skokie.
“I join all decent citizens of Skokie and throughout
the world in my shock and outrage at the plans of a
small group of misfits and outcasts who want to raise
the ugly banner of Nazism here,” Berger said.
“The work of Skokie Mayor Albert Smith and village officials in trying to maintain the peace and tranquility of their streets deserves the thanks of civilized
people everywhere,” said Berger, who is a former
Skokie trustee.
BERGER ALSO lauded Carroll for his legislative
work on behalf of a bill that would make it illegal for
groups like the Nazis to promote their defamation of
any ethnic group.
“Senator Carroll has shown himself to be responsive to the sensitivities of the people in his district and
throughout Illinois in engineering his bill’s passage
through the senate. I look forward to joining him as a
colleague after the November election,” he added.

Description
An account of the resource

During the late 1970s, a small group of neo-Nazis based in Chicago attempted to hold a rally in the Village of Skokie, Illinois, a community that was known to have a large Jewish population. Local officials resisted the group’s efforts through by passing a series of ordinances aimed at preventing demonstrations or parades by hate groups. The ordinances were ultimately overturned following a series of state and federal lawsuits because they infringed on the group’s First Amendment rights and the neo-Nazis were issued a permit to demonstrate in Skokie. However, instead of facing the growing number of organized counter-demonstrators, the group held rallies in Federal Plaza and in Marquette Park in Chicago.

Visit Skokie Public Library's online exhibit to see the events as they unfolded.
