Handwritten note by Amalia E., Skokie Public Library Solar Eclipse Party Time Capsule, August 21, 2017
Description
Handwritten note on 4 x 6 index card in purple pen by Amalia E. for the Skokie Public Library Solar Eclipse Party Time Capsule. Just after noon on Monday, August 21, 2017, the Skokie, Illinois community joined others across the United States in viewing the astronomical event of the year: the solar eclipse. The library provided 300 free, safe viewing glasses for participants—a number dwarfed by the 1,123 people who ultimately participated. Participants were invited to write notes for watchers of the next solar eclipse to take place in the continental United States on Monday, April 8, 2024.
Transcript of card: “Es la segunda vez que miro. [1st] eclipse cuando paso en el '9, fue a mediodía también y se oscureció y todos los animales...se fueron a los corrales, pájaros a los árboles.” Translation (English): “It is the second time I've seen [an eclipse]. When the 1st eclipse happened in ’91, it was midday too, and it was dark and all the animals…went to the corrals, the birds to the trees.”
