This manuscript details the story of Gwendoline Fortune and her family, one of the first Black families to move to Skokie in the 1960s. Fortune describes the complex social position of being an upwardly mobile, educated and financially secure Black family in a predominantly White and Jewish community, and the racism and friendships she and her family encountered while living in Skokie. Fortune often described her writing as "faction."
