CLEAR IT UP BY
LONG DISTANCE
When in the daily course of business a
question arises which requires information or a decision from some person not
in town, turn to the long distance telephone.
No matter how far away this man may
be, he can usually be reached in a short
time over Bell lines.
Illinois Bell Telephone Company
-
Don't
"Cool Your Heels"
UGH time is wasted by salesmen and others who call upon
business men without appointment
and are kept waiting in ante-rooms.
This can be avoided by making
definite appointments by long distance telephone before you start on
your out-of-town trip.

is Your
"Telephone Door"
Large Enough?
If you could see that the door of your place of business wasn't
large enough for your customers to get in, you'd be certain
to enlarge it or to open another door, wouldn't you?
How about your "telephone door"? Is it sufficient to take care
of the ever increasing number of "telephone buyers" or are some
of them kept out of your place of business and their patronage
diverted by the oft repeated "busy" signal?
Owing to the convenience of buying by telephone many patrons
will enter your establishment through your "telephone door," 1\4r.
Business Man, if you but make it easy for them to do so. Don't
you think it will pay you to know beyond doubt whether your
"telephone door" is always open or whether it is being "slammed
in the face'' of your customers—present and prospective?
We will gladly study your requirements if you desire.

Covered Wagon
INDING its way
WacrosstheIowa and
Kansas plains, through
the treacherous mountamn passes, over the
burning sands of the
deserts, the covered
wagon journeyed westward.
4
After weary months, the pioneers
reached the west and built their homes.
To-day! A minute—and Chicago is
talking with Denver or San Francisco.
The covered wagon is a romantic memory. Potent, the, throbbing symbol ot
modern life, the long distance telephone
has made the East and West one.

Description
An account of the resource
Only nine years after its invention, the first telephone was installed in Niles Center (Skokie) in 1886, probably in the home of Henry Harms, in the 5300 block of Oakton Street. It cost 25 cents to place a call.
Other toll stations were added in subsequent years until 1910 when the first telephone switchboard was installed in the home of Martha Kindt, on the south side of Galitz Avenue near Niles Center Road. Kindt was the switchboard operator, providing services to 70 phone lines in Niles Center in 1910. The number of lines increased to 326 by the end of 1925.
In response to a increased population, Illinois Bell opened a two-story central office in 1929 at 8231 Niles Center Road. By the end of 1930, there were 1,252 telephone lines in the community.
This is a collection of telephone books from Skokie and surrounding communities, from 1924 to 1953. Communities include Morton Grove, Lincolnwood, Niles, Glenview, and Northbrook. Directories from 1959-1987 will be added in the future.
The original phone books in the Skokie Public Library collection were preserved on microfilm and then more recently the microfilms were scanned to create the digital files in this collection.

At Home in Skokie
Description
An account of the resource

Skokie, Illinois, is a thriving, diverse suburban community of 67,824 (U.S. Census 2020). Much of the housing stock is composed of single-family dwellings, with a healthy mixture of apartments and increasingly, condominiums. Skokie’s earliest settlers were farmers and homesteaders, and their homes were mostly large cabins and farmhouses. There was little industrial development in those early days and population growth was slow. At the turn of the twentieth century, about 500 people lived in Skokie, then called Niles Center.

Skokie’s first housing boom was stimulated by the development of rapid transit and good roads into Chicago in the 1920s. Land speculators saw the possibility of developing the area for apartment buildings with easy access to the city center, and many subdivisions, streets, sidewalks, and utilities were laid out. The population of Skokie was 763 in 1920; by 1930 it was 5,007. The onset of the Great Depression brought all this hopeful activity to a halt; thousands of lots were abandoned and some were eventually used again as farmland.

After World War II, many of these titles were cleared and lot sizes were revised to provide for single-family homes with 40-55 foot frontages. This second housing boom was the definitive one for Skokie; postwar prosperity, population growth, and the rise of the automobile created demand for the kind of single-family housing Skokie was in a position to supply. Skokie’s population in 1940 was 7,172; by 1950 it was 14,752. Once again, transportation was a factor in growth: the Edens Expressway, which opened in 1951, provided a major route to the city for burgeoning automobile traffic from the suburbs.

This part of the story is not unique to Skokie; many formerly rural communities grew into suburbs in the 1940s and 1950s. The development of the suburb and the automobile, the growth in homeownership and geographic mobility, are all extremely important parts of the mid-century American experience, and the histories of individual communities contribute to our understanding of broad historic trends.

Histories of planned communities like Park Forest have found a place in the Illinois Digital Archives, and Sears homes have been documented in the Elgin Sears House Research Project from Gail Borden Public Library. The Thomas Ford Memorial Library, in partnership with Western Springs Historical Society, has digitized photographs of historically significant homes in Western Springs.
