Fair Housing in Skokie: Past and Present - 2024
In the summer of 2024, the library offered a panel presentation called Fair Housing in Skokie: Past and Present. Speakers included David Jones and his daughter, Becky Betts, Emily England from the Skokie Heritage Museum, Alex Chaparro, a realtor and member of the Skokie Human Relations Commission, David Donegan (moderator) from the Skokie Human Relations Commission, and Dominic Voz from Open Communities.
Staff who attended the event shared their reflections and impressions of the event shared in a blog post. The post includes a suggested reading list from Emily England, museum manager at the Skokie Heritage Museum, as well as resources referenced by Open Communities during the event and the Skokie Heritage Museum’s presentation slides.
In September 2024, the library installed an exhibit, The Beginnings of Fair Housing in Skokie, located near the east entrance. This exhibit is based on our online exhibit exploring the origins and progress of fair housing in Skokie with original materials courtesy of the Skokie Heritage Museum.
