Title

Handwritten note by Sarah and Shebeena Khan, Skokie Public Library Solar Eclipse Party Time Capsule, August 21, 2017

Description

Handwritten note on stationery paper in pen by Sarah and Shabeena Khan for the Skokie Public Library Solar Eclipse Party Time Capsule. Just after noon on Monday, August 21, 2017, the Skokie, Illinois community joined others across the United States in viewing the astronomical event of the year: the solar eclipse. The library provided 300 free, safe viewing glasses for participants—a number dwarfed by the 1,123 people who ultimately participated. Participants were invited to write notes for watchers of the next solar eclipse to take place in the continental United States on Monday, April 8, 2024.
Transcript of note: “August 21, 2017 – muggy, cloudy day. Life in 2017 – Khan residence – Skokie, IL. Sarah and Shabeena Khan are here to see the total solar eclipse. Sarah is going to 5th grade. Shabeena lives in Seattle now. We are excited to see the eclipse. Love the library. April 8, 2024 – 7 years next eclipse. Sarah likes reading Harry Potter books. Skokie is a very diverse community, so authentic. Many generations here to see the eclipse. Sarah doesn’t want to write anything. We are about to get the solar eclipse glasses to see the eclipse. – Sarah and Shabeena Khan”
